Directing Broadcast Newscast

In my role as Director and Technical Director for V.C.U.'s newscast Insight, I was responsible for overseeing the production of live broadcasts from start to finish. This included directing the on-air talent, coordinating with camera operators and technical staff, and ensuring seamless transitions between segments. I managed the timing, visual elements, and live switching of video feeds, while also handling technical aspects such as controlling graphics, audio, and video feeds. My duties involved making real-time decisions to adapt to the flow of the broadcast, ensuring a smooth and professional presentation. The position required strong leadership, attention to detail, and the ability to problem-solve quickly in a fast-paced, live environment.

Senior Capstone Documentary: "An Bui - A Community Profile"

For my Senior Capstone, I worked with two peers to create a 10-minute documentary on An Bui, a key community figure in Richmond, VA. I served as both cinematographer and video editor, capturing footage that supported the story's narrative and tone while collaborating closely with the director. In editing, I focused on crafting a cohesive and engaging narrative, learning the value of ample B-roll for smooth transitions and storytelling flexibility. This project sharpened my technical skills and reinforced the importance of creative collaboration under tight deadlines.

News Package Production for VCU's "Insight" Newscast

During my undergraduate studies at VCU, I was responsible for interviewing, filming, and editing several news packages for the university’s newscast, Insight. I took full ownership of each story, from conducting in-depth interviews to capturing compelling visuals, and then editing the final piece to ensure it was both engaging and informative. My role required me to craft human interest stories, using creative interviewing techniques and strong storytelling to highlight the personal aspects of each subject. This experience allowed me to develop a keen sense of timing, narrative structure, and the technical skills necessary for producing polished news segments.
